What’s The Healthiest Light Bulb?
Why I'm Going Full Edison Bulb in 2025
I’m Jacob Katz, and this is The Renewal: where we expose the secrets Big Health doesn't want you to know about. If you’re reading this, keep it to yourself.

Want to know how industrial chicken farmers make their birds gain weight faster? They blast them with LED blue light. All. Day. Long. 🐔
That's the exact same kind of light you're probably sitting under right now.
We're living through the Great American Sickening™️ - the unhealthiest generation in history. And while everyone's busy pointing fingers at processed foods and screen time, I've discovered something wild: your home might be secretly poisoning you. 🏠☠️
Think about it: You spend 70%+ of your time in buildings that are basically toxic boxes. The air? Poisoned. The water? Sus. The lights above your head? They're literally using chicken-fattening technology on you.
So how do we make your environment healthy?
Let's start with the easiest fix that nobody's talking about - one that made my landlord cry (pays my electricity) but changed my life within days... 💡
Remember those "energy-efficient" LED bulbs that replaced your grandma's warm, cozy incandescents? They're not just saving money on your electric bill - they're ruining your circadian rhythm.
Your LED bulbs are gaslighting you (grab your phone, switch to slo-mo, and see for yourself 👀)
See that flicker? Your "energy-efficient" lighting is actually just... turning off and on hundreds of times per second.
While your conscious mind might not notice, your brain is working overtime to process this strobe-light effect. This constant flickering in your environment has real impact on mood, and can even cause seizure or long-term neurological damage (link).
To address, simply buy incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs mirror natural sunlight with their smooth, continuous light spectrum.
The most revolutionary health upgrade I made this year was going full Thomas Edison. 💡
Within days of switching to incandescent bulbs, I noticed:
My sleep went from "meh" to "magnificent"
My mood stabilized (turns out my brain doesn't like strobe lights 24/7)
My eyes stopped feeling like they'd been binge-watching Netflix for 12 hours straight
My house suddenly felt like... home?
Now, I know what you're thinking: "But Jacob, aren't incandescent bulbs banned? Isn't this like, illegal?"

Let's just say... there are ways. And I'm about to show you exactly how to join the incandescent underground. Because sometimes the best solutions are the ones they're trying to make disappear. 👀
Turns out the government isn't super thrilled about us using "inefficient" lighting. (Because saving 0.00001% on your electric bill is more important than your hormones? Make it make sense. 🤦♂️)
While they've been trying to phase out our beloved Edison bulbs since 2007, you can still get your hands on them if you know where to look. And your boy Jacob's got the hookup.
The Underground Incandescent Shopping Guide:
First, check if you're in California (sorry, they're extra spicy about banning stuff these days). For everyone else, here are your new best friends:
Bulbs.com (sounds fake, is legit)
Amazon's vintage section (but stick to my recommendations below)

That exposed filament? Pure aesthetic gold ✨
Warm glow that makes you look like a snack
Zero chicken-farm vibes
"But Jacob, what about my electric bill?"
Listen, I get it. These bad boys do use more juice - about 90% of their energy goes to heat. But you’re missing something huge: the biological cost of modern lighting - what's the point of saving $5 on your electric bill if you're spending $500 on supplements to fix your broken sleep?
And I'm not saying we should ignore environmental concerns, but perhaps we need to expand our definition of "environmental impact" to include the environment of our bodies.
Plus, free space heater in winter.
For the Strategically-Broke:
Start with your eating and sleeping spaces
Replace one room at a time
"But what if I HAVE to use LED?"
deep sigh
Fine. If you absolutely must stay in Big Lighting's good graces, here's the least-terrible option: PHILIPS LED Dimmable Light Bulbs with CRI 95+
As close to natural light as fake light gets
Minimal flicker (but still not zero, just saying)
(Full disclosure: If you buy through my Amazon links, I make enough for a cup of ramen. Thanks for feeding your boy. 🍜)
I believe fixing your home environment is one of the highest-leverage things you can do to improve your health. And cleaning up your home and work environments - places where you spend 70%+ of your time - will make a huge difference.
But seriously... if you care about your:
Sleep quality
Hormone balance
Eye health
General vibe
Not being part of a chicken-farm experiment
...just bite the bullet and go incandescent.
TL;DR: Incandescent > LED
Steady light that doesn't flicker
Real sunlight spectrum
No toxic materials
Better sleep & mood
Time-tested tech
Yes, higher electric bill. No, doesn't matter compared to health costs.
Stay lit (incandescently),
Jacob
